I have a 2008 XL1200C that I want to put a HiFlo washable K&N type air filter on. I also want to install a new backing plate that redirects the case gasses directly into the venturi and be able to use the stock AC cover.
I looked at the Vance&Hines VO-2 naked but found in the fine print that the stock cover cannot be used on sportsters.
Any suggestions?
Your stock set up vents the crank case the way you are asking about. You can simply get a K&N direct fit filter for your stock set up.
When pre 04 Sportsters come in and want what you are asking I just use a stock 04 & up backing plate trimmed down or a "stage 1" kit.
Here's one I put on an 03. Uses the stock air cleaner cover. You can see where the crank case vent tubes direct the oil mist directly into the mouth of the carb to be burnt off.
Thanks mreed, the pic you show appears to be the SE stage1 backing plate. The '08 stock AC vents straight into the Filter not into the venturi.
I will probably have to go with the SE stage1 kit.
If you're handy in the garage you don't need to buy the whole kit. Just get a couple 1/2-13 bolts, drill through them and tap the ends for NPT (pipe thread) from there you can get a 90 degree brass compression fitting and bend a simple piece of copper tube for each vent to where you want it to be.
Like this
I vent them straight at the head to compliment the filter kit I make but instead of the flush breather vents exposed like I do it, you could use your stock backing plate and plumb it around like I stated.
