Question 883 or 1200?

A friend of mine bought an 02, 883.
The guy he bought it from said he put the 1200 conversion kit on it.
How can you tell if this is true?
Are there any kind of numbers on the new cylinders which would indicate the modification?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

If he's ever ridden an 883, he'll feel it. The original 883 cylinders can be bored out to a 1200 and just add the pistons. I have a snakecolor video camera that i put in the cylinder through the spark plug hole that tells me.

The only real way would be to check the bore. However, it may be possible to open up the carb and check the jets. If it was upgraded to a 1200 it will have to have bigger jets or it will be severely lean. Stock jets are:

stock 883 42/160
stock 1200 42/170 (195 on 1200s)

If it has been Stage 1'd, I would expect to see 44(45)/165 on the 883 and 45/175 on the 1200 at least.

please explain why a larger bore would lean out a engine ??
I understand if you change aircleaner or exhaust, but if all you do is enlarge the bore , than would not the fuel/air ratio be the same?

Yeah both engines haul ***,,
Simple way,,find a guy with a stock 883,,
get side by side,,,2nd gear roll on from 20 mph
a 1200 or a convert 883 will walk away from a stock 883,,big time XD

Um If It is a kit conversion,,hope yer buddy knows how to hang on,,,,
he best use a Low hand hold on that throttle,,,,,,,
1200 power with 883 gearing Is a real *** yanker.

It seems to me that if there is a bigger bore with more space in the cylinder, then its necessary for there to be more fuel injected into that extra space to run right. It makes perfect sense to me...but then again i'm not a mechanic...

Ahhh but it is drawing more air through the carb to fill that larger volume. Air that will have gas added at the same rate as before. Should still be the same FA ratio no?

easy to tell. the 883 sounds like a go cart. the 1200 actually has some sound to it. Not to mention its way faster than the 883
