Default Windscreen Buffering

I have just installed a Windshield on my 06 Sportster. Cat no 58192-87A.
I am now experiencing helmet buffering, from about 60 kilometres per hour (35 mph) upwards, it is still the same at 100 to 120 kilometres per hour. (80 mph)
After a few adjustments and test rides the buffering is only mild, but still irritating. Currently the screen is as high as it can be installed, with maximum rake.
Height is constrained by the mounting brackets being at the top of the forks, and the rake is constrained by nearly touching the brake master cylinder.

The improved comfort at high speed is worth the effort, but it would be great to get rid of this buffering.

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

With thanks frook

I have the same (I think) shield and don't really have any buffering at any speed. Sorry Bro, no advice I can give you.

mine does it too. I took the visor off of my helmet because the rattling was bothering me. I guess the buffeting is something you just have to get used to.

Proper helmet fit (not too loose) and strap adjustment (not too loose) can cut down alot on buffeting. I wear both a full face and a 1/2 helmet, at different times, and can tell you the full face is alot more stable than the 1/2 is as the 1/2 is like an upside down bowl catching all the wind. Also, if you have a visor on your helmet, take it off and just run dark tape across the top of your face shield instead.

I just bouht the HD clear detachable standard height. Is it necessary to relocate the cables ? Looks like it will fit fine where the cables are. I will give it a check ... just wondering what others did

Just snap it on and you're all set.

I didn't have to adjust mine, however, check the directions and make sure that the cables don't bind when turning all the way in either direction.

I really think it has a lot to do with the windshield height....

I never rode with a windshield in the past, but my FatBoy came with a detachable windshield installed....

The windshield height was 20" from the headlight cut out to the top. Because of the low sitting height on the Softail the top of the windshield was just below eye level, and I was constantly looking through it part of the time, and trying to sit up and look over it at other times. Didn't like that at all, and I also experienced a lot of buffeting, or whatever it's called. Also, I have long hair and don't wear a helmet, and the wind coming up from under/around the windshield would want to blow my hair straight up in the air.

Using the same hardware I installed a replacement Cee Bailey windshield that was 2" shorter (18") and somewhat thicker, and the same width.

The difference is like night and day. I can sit on the bike and the top of the windshield is right around nose level, or a little lower. Now I can ride looking over the windshield, but if needed I can 'crunch down' and look through it. Even lowered the airflow is directed over my head, and the buffeting is reduced at least 75%. I can ride down the road smoking a cigarette if I want without a problem.

It's amazing to me that lowering a windshield just 2" can make such a difference.
