This usually happens when you are accelerating in too high a gear or coasting in too high a gear.
ya know. i owe you an apology. iread your comment and just blew it off. i hacve too much biking under my *** NOT to know that im lugging a bike. but evidently im wrong. not having owned / ridden a HD before i was driving this like my kawi cruiser.the book is ALL wrong on shift speeds. 25 to 2nd-45 to 3rd-55+to 4th and 5th seems to anywhere north of 65.
im hearing impaired in one ear and cant hear the engine well at that speed. just someone assure me that im not harming the engine by running at too hi an rpm riding like that. are these things truly geraed that hi? amazing.
The drive train on these bikes is a little loose, so shudder comes quicker.
I never shift that high, but mine has the Euro ratio. Accelerating I do 1st to 20, 2nd to 30, 3rd to 43, 4th to 55, 5th to 110.
This is a leasurely accell. The bike will rev much higher and really lay you back, but I get ping if I slam it in first gear. This is the Euro gearing on an 883. I get the shudder if I try to blast it and don't let it rev, or on if I coast with the clutch in at too high a gear. I blame it on the sloppy drive train. Sure, I will get slammed over this Harley sacralige.

Whatever you do, don't follow the shift points posted in the manual. See the posts on this subject. Is this a "new development" and if so, has their been a change in riding style of ambient tempurature that could attribute the change? If you are going to the dealer for the 1000 check, bring it up and let them explore this issue. Likely, it is not a problem, but without riding the bike and actually experiencing what you are sharing, about all we can do is "Couch-Coaching." Good luck.
?
I never shift by anything but the feel and sound of the engine. What, there is a manual?
Nothin wrong with my bike. I have a totally chain drive and this is just the way the 91 Sportster acts. I was just giving relli some info on how Sportsters can act. My 67 1000cc Ironhead had all of this too, except the low end pinging on high excel. Actually, it made so many other noises I'm not sure
It was definately NOT torque starved. Very thirsty for oil though.
Relli, if you really need to get to those RPMs to keep it from suddering maybe rharrison is right. Take it in cause your are torque starved and shoudln't be.
