I'm interested in doing the upgrade in the future also, what kit did you go with and where did you get the cams from? Also what jetting do you have to run with the conversion now?

Yes your timing needs to be retarded, 28ş is a good start. The easiest way is to just get a OEM 1200 Ignition and time it from there. Or you can spend a bit more and get a 1200 programmable ignition.

I hope you also jetted the carb.

@kman harley,,yes I rejeted the carb. to a 48/180,,,an I got the cams from powersports and the 1200 conversion kit from KCint.com. ,,,
@xFreeBirdx,,,thanks for the info there,,,can I get that timing out of the stock ingn. or is best to get it out of an 1200 one,,,,,also is it going to hurt anything to ride it some ,,, as like breaking it in where I have it now,,,I don't hear any spark knock,,but then again it's hard to hear with all the exh. noise... i know alot of timing is bad for a new engine in cars/trucks,,i would think it would go for motorcycles too,,thats why I'm asking....I know this is a commond up grade for ones that have 883's,and you guys get tired of answering the same questions all the time,,but I'm really gracefull here for the help,,,THANKS ,,,,,

yes you can get it timed out of a stock ignition. Its just a little trickier, you also may have to adjust the VOEs. The 1200 ignition makes it a lot easier. Most people can just plug and play with one.

I would not ride it without getting the timing right or at least close. You can end up doing serious damage by not doing it. Your not hearing the pinging or predetonation as well cause the motor is so tight with the new build.
