Sporty Project, Input Please...
Ok guys, I just finished my 05 FXDXI rebuild and sent it out for its first tune, and now im looking to start a new project, but i want to do alot more research and planning this time around.
My plan is to buy a used sportster and turn it into either a "cafe racer" style bike or a "street legal" drag bike... Kinda like what guys used to do with the old KZ1000's. I dont know what year sporty would be good to tear down and rebuild, if a model year lends itself to such an idea. Just dont know which way to go, or really where to start looking for ideas on either build. So let all of your good ideas rain down upon me. My only stipulation is the sporty has to be carburated.

Excuse my ignorance on the sportsters, but please explain "excessive wiring" ...
In 04 HD began installing sensors and a larger ignition module that carries its own larger bundle of wiring. In 07 HD switched to fuel injection and that brought along an ECM and about 8 more miles of wiring. All of the extra wiring makes it just a little more difficult to get that simplified look that a cafe, shopper or bobber would have.

Yeah. Do you have a pic of something kind of what you're shooting for? There are several interpretations of a cafe racer.

. But what im lookin for is a high stance, clipons, bar end mirriors, one piece tail with burton on leather seat cover, a tank with indents and "pads" for the knees... no fairing and an exhaust that sounds like I pulled it off a 250 dirt bike... paint a pretty decent image? Lmao...
