My brother has a V-star 650 classic and my father has an 1100 custom. I like my Harley a LOT more than either of those, but I will tell you, the difference is a lot. The sportsters are narrow and slim, the V-star's are wide and low.

Your best bet is to go sit on a 1200 at the dealer and see how you like it. Power wise the 650 feels extremely underpowered even compared to my 883. I don't think you would be disappointed in the 1200's power, though I've never ridden one.

my buddy i ride with rides a vstar 650 and i ride an 883custom. Im 6-0 185 and the 883 has plenty-o-power to move me around. congrats on getting a Harley! you've come to the right place. if you go from the vstar to a 1200, hold on, it will catch you off guard!

Going from your 650 to the 1200 will be a pretty good jump. If you think your bike now is adequately powered the Sportster will be more than enough.

Also, the 1200 Sportster has a better power to weight ratio than the Big Twins...never understood where they come off saying the Sportsters are underpowered compared the BTs...and I own a Dyna now too! My Sportster would eat it for lunch on a twisty mountain road. (Oh but this Dyna is great on long highway rides...so comfortable)

I think you'll be really happy with the Nightster but as others have said this is a personal choice you have to make for yourself. Go sit on a few.

I went from an 800cc Suzuki Boulevard to my Nightster and couldn't be happier. I gave up some comfort, but the big increase in power and overall smile factor makes it worth it in the end for me.
