I like detatchable everything. I love the look of my bike without any of the detechments, but often I like to put on a windshield and the sissy bar without having to get out tools. It's quick and easy and your ready to go lickitisplit!

Mine are rigid for a couple of reasons. One being cost. But, more importantly, several other HD accessories will only work with the rigid side plates, and I wanted to add a few of those accessories also. Might check and see if there is anything in the future that you will want that require either rigid mount or detachable.

I've got the detachable and I like it just fine, but it was buzzing against its bushings. A little electrical tape ended that, though. I don't like having to run a cable though it when I'm parking it downtown, but that's just my paranoid side taking over.

I like the sissy bar look -- and I like having a luggae rack on 24/7 with a couple bugees wrapped around the bar. You never know when you may need to strap something onto your bike. As well I do not like the look of the detachable side plates. So obviously, I went with the rigid mount and do not really regret it. It really is a "to each his own" sort of thing.

I think the previous advice given in this string to research further accessories you may want, and determing if they work with detachable or rigid sideplates, is good advice.

I think the rigid is a neater look as far as installation goes. I went with the rigid minni rail, back rest and billet plate because I have my bike set up as a bagger. (windshield, harley bags, etc).

If I had wanted to occasionally go with the minimum look I would have gone with the detachable. It really depends on what you want.

I have the detachable sissy bar with rack and love it. It allows me to change the function and appearance with ease. It may cost more but it's worth every penny IMHO. Most of the time I ride with it off. I prefer the minimal look. When riding 2-up or shopping I add the bar and rack.

Same here. I especially like it when I travel and stay at a motel. Just pop the 2 pins and carry everything into the room at one time!!! Luggage, rack, sissy bar and backrest. What's not to like???

I agree with SportyPig about the accessories. Make sure you consider everything you might want to add in the future before deciding on the sideplates. I know there are H-D saddlebags that I like that won't work with the detachables.

That's one of the main reasons why I just purchased the FLSTFI, because of it's ability to go from a 'stripped down' cruiser to a 'long range tourer' almost instantly.

I do a lot of long range touring, and always wanted something with 'quick disconnect' bar, bags, and windshield, but I could never force myself to add all this stuff to any of my current bikes.

But the HD detachable stuff is expensive, to say the least...

The original owner had the quick disconnect windshield, backrest/storage rack, and bags installed, at a cost of over $1,400. [8D]
