just bought a 1999 883 and the speedmeter wont do anything i mean nothing. no light wont show millage or any thing. any body got ant ideas thanks

Check the speed sensor it gets little pieces of metal stuck to it and it goes haywire. Might have to replace it. Also you can take the back off the speedo and make sure the connections are good.

The service manual for your year bike and model is a must have. There is a pretty good sized area in the troubleshooting section to help diagnose speedometer problems.

I agree I had the speedo problem on my 48 and I lucked out and got a manual for $40 on ebay and thats what fixed my problem. It was the metal flakes on the speed sensor when I took it out.
