Default Increasing Performance: Intake vs. Exhaust?

I posted this in the general board as well, but i thought it might get a better response here.

I recently purchased a '96 Sportster 1200 Custom. I love the bike, and I have logged some serious miles in the few weeks I have had it. I want to do some performance upgrades at some point, and I need a little expertise in this area.

I am on a limited budget. I have also heard that Sturgis is the place to get this stuff done because there are some killer deals and they can get it done pretty quick for you. Is this a good idea?

The big question is...what should i buy to give myself the most bang for my buck perfomance wise. Air intake, or exhaust? Or both? Or something completely different? And what combinations seems to go well together for my 96 Custom?

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

hmmm...sounds like you need the crowbar combo...

1) get yourself a nice 3/4-1" round prybar with a point on one end...slam it through your OEM muffler baffles.

2) purchase some X14's or whichever is right for your bike, www.nightrider.com

3) purchase the air cleaner support bracket kit w/ breather from www.jirehcycles.com part # 39-440, then go to Autozone or whereever and purchase the Spectre 4" round air cleaner

I think in total, you'd be under $300 total.

A grand will get you a stage 1 (intake and Pipes) and a good programable tuner and the carb tuned. $1500 will also get you some good head work done.
It'll make a big difference.

Sorry for all my stupid questions. Stage 1 intake and pipes - does this mean that i only get to choose that one style of pipes? how much do my HP and what not increase with the Stage 1 intake and pipes, and the tuning?

I like the "simplicity" of being able to say I want stage one intake and pipes and i want the carbs tuned to the stage 1.

ah yes...it is, thank you for pointing that out.

So figure in the rejetting parts and labor. My Iron is EFI, and the last carb bike I had was in 96 so those prices don't count today .

WELL under. Only cost me $130 for the EXACT set up.
Except for "spectre 4" not sure about that. I bought a 4 inch ac from autozone for $13.
