2002 xl 883 shifter problems

2002 xl 883 shifter problems
will riding to work, I lost all gear but 1st neutral lite will not lite up
after working the shifter by hand . got the trans problem fixed ( or so , I thought & hoped )
bike ran through gears for only a short time but then went to hell again.
This must be a common occurrence or problem and I believe,
a simple fix
is there a spring or pin that is known to fail that may cause this problem.
sure hope someone else has had this problem and found a cure
