Worst case scenario, bad starter cuz it sounds like a dead spot in the starter.
A dead spot will draw major current and possibly kill the battery.
I'd b worried about that oil buildup cuz at over 200+ miles it shud be clean as a whistle in there IMO. Mine at 25k looks cleaner.

I was thinking a dead spot in the armature too.

The easiest way to tell would be to hook an oscilloscope up to it.

Low miles isn't always a good thing. This one may have had the oil topped off while on the jiffy stand more than a few times, a high oil level combined with high RPMs leads to excessive oil in the intake. Clean it out with some sea-foam and you should be fine. Starter is on it's way out, they should spin up as soon as you hit the button. Having so few miles, be sure to check/change the oil as there is a possibility of moisture accumulation from short trips that don't let the engine warm up. Not to scare you, but this is my low miles horror story...

Bought my 98 with 7700 on it, rode fine till it hit 10K. Started having a cold knock, then lost power on the front cylinder one day. Had it checked out, the exhaust valve guide was almost completely pulled out of the head. Valve had to be replaced since the rust pitting on the face and stem was so bad it couldn't be ground. Tons of sitting and improper storage did it IMO.

Now that you've got it, ride the hell out of it! Nice scoot

I have to agree with this

also when it finally catches it sounds like something is slipping

something loose someplace or the starter is cooked I would think
but there is a ton of people on here that know more than I do

wheres Charlie he could probably tell us all what is was in his sleep just by the sound LOL

nice!

When you hit the start button the starter clunks and then hesitates for a second and then turns the bike over. I originally thought the battery was low so I trickle charged it all night and then performed a load test and it is fine. I was wondering how a bike with so little miles would have a problem like this. It doesnt have trouble starting it its just that initial turn over that it acts strangely.
Sounds like a flaky starter as mentioned, but at 235 miles? That sounds unusual.

The second problem is that from a low rpm or at idle, upon giving it a quick throttle change it will pop and shudder. Even a small blip of the throttle.
Mine had a similar issue... was caused by a failed crank position sensor, a common problem with earlier rubbermounts. Costs maybe $60.00 and you can change it yourself in about ten minutes. It's located on the front of the crankcase, left side, a few inches below the oil filter. The popping could be a leaking intake seal, yours are due for a change... cheap, but a little more work to change. Could also be leaky exhaust seals in combination with the other problems. Also check your front engine mount bolt for proper torque if it still shudders after everything else is fixed, they have been known to come loose.

I took the air filter and cover off and there is oil going into the carb.
A little oil stain in the carb is not unusual, but if it's wet like it looks, that's a little much. Is the filter soaked? It will need to be replaced... do it after you fix the oil problem. Did you change the oil? Should be 2.8 quarts ( I dump in the full 3) if it's on the high side you may get some extra blow by from the breathers... the two large hollow bolts holding the filter back plate on. The oil may also be indicative of stuck piston rings allowing excessive crankcase pressure and blow by. They can get stuck from sitting too long with a high moisture content inside the case, rusting them in place.

I am wondering how long this sat because of the low miles and if it is going to have problems
My '05 sat for almost a year before I bought it, needed the crank sensor, intake seals, rear master cylinder rebuild, oil change & filter, primary oil change ( the clutch was glued stuck) and an idle mixture adjustment. It ran great after that. Yours will likely need most of that as well as a clutch adjustment. The bike will have 'problems' whether it sits or runs, it is the nature of owning a Sportster... I'm finding most of the problems manageable, and relatively cheap if you can fix them yourself. Your biggest expense may be the oil blow by issue if it is caused by stuck ring... get a compression test done on both cylinders, if even one is not up to snuff, you may have to pull the jugs to deal with that

Thank you all for the help

Jason
Hope some of this was actually helpful, good luck!

As per 95th1200 definitely change out oil/filter. Personally I'd be tempted to run ATF or an engine type cleaner with the oil to clear out any oil ports in case of sludge plugging.

This bike is not even broke in. How fast have you ridden it, previous owner or possibly other buyers?
What kind of environment was it stored in?
Just don't run the snot out of it until this oil issue is cleared up.
The low miles makes me speculate someone bought it as a showpiece and basically sat in their driveway revving the fck out of it.

Thanks everyone for the help, I am trying to take in all of your responses haha.

The oil level in the bike is right in the middle between add and full and I have been riding it easy because it is still on its break-in.

The previous owner apparently had the bike and rode it only a short time before deciding that riding wasnt for them.

Twice now after I have shut the bike off and it has a little bit of run-on, where in probably fires 2 or 3 more times after I shut it down then it coughs and dies and the oil lamp illuminates on the gauge. I am wondering if that is the source of the oil (atleast thats what I'm hoping). Is there any other reason for that run-on other then a dirty carb?

One thing no one mentioned is that when the engine stops right up against the next compression stroke the starter has to get the engine over that first compression stroke with no momentum, this will cause the exact thing you're describing. Mine has done that since new on occasion.

My 2009 1200C's starter sounds the same and has done it since day one, which has been explained to me as compression related. Also my Electra Glide exibits the same starter operation.

I would empty out that tank to rule out stale gas/low octane and put high octane and Seafoam in it. I would get that Seafoam spray and spray the intake while it's running. As someone else mentioned you might have gaskets that have dry rotted.
The run on or dieseling might be caused by a lean condition in the A/F mixture but at that miles that should not be happening.
I can't think of the carb component but extra gas is entering after shutoff causing the run on.
I'm thinking it's carb/gasket/gas related.
I would also pull those plugs and if they are oil soaked then you got problems if they are white then it's an indicator of a lean condition.
