Here's some information to ponder: All 2004 Sportsters, and I assume this applies thru 200?, the rear sproket on all models has 68 teeth. The transmission sproket on the 883 has 28 teeth (2.429:1) and the 1200 has 29 teeth (2.345:1). There is 1 tooth difference between the 883 belt (136 teeth) and the 1200 belt (137 teeth). By the book, the belt should probably be changed if an 883 owner changed his transmission sproket to a 29 tooth.
Unless something has been altered by harley to make this difficult it should work. I have done 5 bikes from 72 thru 2004 by upping that engine sprocket 1 tooth and have never had to change the chain/belt.
If, for some reason you lengthened your frame, you would need to lengthen your belt or chain.
In so doing, you would automatically have more (or less) grooves or links. This does not mean that you would have to change your sprockets. I have to agree with tatkin. There should not be any need to change the belt.
