Hey Clayman,

This site http://stores.ebay.com/HARLEY-DAVIDS...PORTSTER-PARTS is a distributor for the kits. The cylinders are from V-Twin, the pistons are Weisco and the ring sets are Hastings....all known companies. HD only packages parts and jacks up the price to whatever the market will tolerate. I did use the HD top end gasket set ($90 HD....$60..at this site) The gasket set contains all the gaskets you need for the conversion. Never reuse gaskets.

Hey fellas ......; Olesalt. I too am in a technical field; Networking for 26 years... Equant, GE Corp R+D, AT&T now VZB... and ex Navy ..... I too like to research ... it strikes me as odd that this may not apply .. I guess I lost the link to the link explaining the act ...

THE TRUTH:

Most vehicle owners are not aware they are protected by federal law:
the Magnuson-Moss Warranty – Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act
of 1975. Under the Magnuson-Moss Act, aftermarket equipment which
improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer’s original
warranty, unless the warranty clearly and conspicuously states that
aftermarket equipment voids the warranty. Most states have warranty
statutes, as well. Which provide further protections for vehicle owners.

In other words, that means a dealer can’t wiggle out of his legal
warranty obligation merely because you install aftermarket equipment.
To find out if any aftermarket equipment automatically voids your
vehicle’s warranty, check the owner’s manual. It is likely the language
you are looking for appears under a heading such as “What Is Not Covered”
Although the language seems negative, remember your vehicle manufacturer
is simply saying he does not cover the aftermarket products themselves.
He is not saying that the products would void the vehicle warranty.

VEHICLE DEALERS OBLIGATIONS:

Suppose your modified vehicle needs repairs while still under warranty.
Without analyzing the true cause of the problem, the dealer attempts
to deny warranty coverage. He made his decision simply based on the
fact that you’ve installed aftermarket equipment – a convenient way to
dodge low-paying warranty work.

An example of how ridiculous this can get is the man who was denied
warranty coverage by a dealer on his power door locks, because he had
improved his exhaust system! Sounds nuts? It really happened – because
that man did not know his rights and challenge the dealer’s decision.

Fact: A dealer must prove – not just say – that aftermarket equipment
caused the need for repairs before he can deny warranty coverage on that
basis.

YOUR RIGHTS:
Point out to the dealer the provision of the Magnuson-Moss Act- Require
that he explain to you how the aftermarket equipment caused the problem.
If he can’t – or his explanation sounds questionable – it is your legal
right to demand he comply with the warranty.

Fact: If you are still being unfairly denied warranty coverage, there is
recourse. The Federal Trade Commission, which administers the Magnuson-Moss
Act, monitors compliance with warranty issues. Direct complaints to the
FTC at (202) 326-3128.

Hi Olesalt, Nice looking sporty. I just had my '04 883 conversion to 1200 with Wiseco also. Did you have a lot more noise coming from the engine? Mine is very noisy and has knocking sounds. The H-D dealer that did the upgrade advised that it would be noisy before they did the job but I was shocked at just how noisy.[:'(]

I'm not very familiar with this subject.. so this thread has been very helpful... I'm in the market for a sportster.. and there's a good deal on a 2005 883 with a 1200 conversion... what should I look for in terms of making sure the job was done right...

As was stated in the other thread, run it around for about 15-20 miles, and pull over to check for leaking oil, smoke, and any excessive noise. There will be some noise in the top end, but should not be excessive.

The best combination that i have done that istotally durable and totally haul you know what is cast flat top pistons, Buell Thunderstorm heads, S.E. 497 cams, Mikuni 42 carb, and a Thunderheader or D@D fatcat pipe. The last one that i did was dynoed at 92h.p. and 94tq. It was fun. It was on a 87 model. 40,000 miles of total abuse street and dragstrip. Sold it guy still riding with no problems.

Yeah when you use the Wiesco pistons with the Harley jugs ( if that is what you did ) the Wiesco pistons are forged pistons not cast. What happens is the cylinders are not properly fit to the pistons. When using forged pistons the tolerances have to be much tighter to ease the noise and also make it last longer. That knocking that you are hearing is just that! Unless someone wants to run nitros or outragous compression i always use cast pistons. Don't let anyone yell you cast want last. Everymotor i have ever built except for the ones i mentioned are still going strong.

What is your goal ? My goal was to make my 2013 XL883L more ‘ 2-up’ friendly so I needed to put some money in the rear/ front suspension and seat beside some more grunt. If you divide dollars by horsepower you get the most bang for your buck by doing just the ‘ basic ‘ conversion ( see Hammer kit ) . Basically you just change to 1200 jugs and concave pistons and keep your 883 heads and valves. Then choose what ever performance muffler and air intake suits your fancy and you have just about doubled your torque and hp from stock 883 and not broke the bank. After that the law of marginal returns starts to kick in and every dollar spent gets you less additional torque/hp. My HD dealer pieced together the ‘basic’ kit for about $400 less than the Hammer basic kit.
