Good luck! I did that work on my rear rocker box two months ago. It just takes time. Make sure you have a torque wrench and a VERY FLAT little wrench like this one to remove the top rocker box cover screws: https://www.denniskirk.com/motion-pr...prd/282560.sku
Interesting, I never saw this before. Would this be used for if you're not removing the gas tank? Or do you need it even if you do remove the tank?

With that tool, I slided the tank forward, I didn't remove it completely. Even if you remove the tank, I don't think you can fit a torque wrench on the rear top rocker box screws because the frame is on the way.
OK, I finally got my round tuit & I just finished the front gaskets. How in the world do I get the rear top off? It's just so tight, I'm not seeing how it comes out. I saw a youtube clip where a guy showed how to remove the rear top off an ironhead (I think) But it's not working for me.
Service manual offers no advice for the rear. Anyone? '08 Nightster.
Thanks.

You really gotta work it. It takes a little bit of wiggling and juggling, but it comes out of there.
Man, I was thinking it would never come out, then all of a sudden I found the sweet spot. Finally. Talk about a tight design, sheesh.
Looking forward to no more leaks.
I use one of those tools from Dennis Kirk too. Not only does it let you get into those tight spots, I like that you can use it with your torque wrench.
Yee ha! Success. Thanks to this thread: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/tech-...eplacment.html I was able to see what I was up against before even starting the job.
Thanks to old skool for the great write up. I'm Back on the road again.
I noticed last week it seems the left rear corner of the rear head is leaking at the top. I don't see much on the fins, but down by what to me looks like the starter, all the black powder coat is a lot glossier... Haven't actually taken the time to check it out but, it's only got 1650miles on it! Anyone know if that's something that would be covered under warranty?
