Anyone ridden a newer 883 and a stock iron head 1000? I had a 1984 XLX1000 for some years. Now I want an 883R.Would the newer 883 FI have as much or more power than a stock 1000?

Wrong on the 1200, the 883 built the rep, you had many variations of bigger cc bikes before the 1200 came to be.
ORIGINAL: dbleagle

First off... they are not identical...

I forget the exact numbers, but the 883 has about 47-49 hp... the 1200 at about 70 hp....

The 1200 has different heads, cams, more compression different pistons and the like...

Visually they are different...

If you're trying to justify 2000 dollars then I don't know what to tell you...

Harley's reputation was built on the 1200 platform... is about all I can say...

Charlie D.
I guess that would depend on how far you go back in history and take popularity in account... but I won't argue your point as I am not a historian on Harley...

I guess at the begining... the engine was no where near 883.... or what ever that cc equates to in cubic inch displacement as the use to be refered to. I'm 58 years old and all I remember it the big bike was the Harley 74 which equates roughly a 1200cc....

But you point is well taken...

I guess I would fall into the catagory of "I wish I had". I have a 2006 883C. It is a great bike...larger tank nice paint. It is my first Harley. I can now say that I wish that I had bought the 1200. There is nothing wrong with the 883...it is just the smallest of the Harleys. Maybe it is a psychological thing, but after all, it is the piglet in the hog pen.

I have an 06 883....just got back from my HD dealer and they quoted me 1450.00 to do a 1200 conversion (cylinders, pistons, ignition, and labor)....I already have air and exhaust done. The service tech thought the bike would put out mid to high 80's in the TQ department....this seems high to me. Are converted bikes really that much faster???? Anyone who has done this....is it worth the buck? Cheers, Ted.

Big Twins in a Dyna or a Softy without all the bags and such have the same power to weight and performance with the same mods.

Torque to weight ratio for an 07 1200R is 7.4 07 Nightrain is 7.8 The sporty has more torque per pound than the Nightrain....so Nine is right. Gearing and torque transfer to the rear wheel will skew things a tad......

$1450 is a lot of jack for a 1200 conversion. 'Round here there found for under $1k at HD. I'd shop around and see if maybe there's an indy or another HD dealer within reasonable distance and maybe save you a few hundred.
