This morning is off to an epic start. I'm loading the bikes to head to Daytona, and my girlfriend's 03 Sportster, which had been running fine, starts gushing gasoline out the air cleaner every time I start it.
Okay I'm no mechanic and this ain't my bike so forgive my less than perfect terminology. You've got three allen screws that hold the black oval plate to the carburetor. Then there's a hole (looks like a screw hole but isn't) at about 10 o'clock I guess. The gas is coming out of there, whenever the bike is running.
Sound like a float issue?? I got the bike trailered and I guess I'll be working on it at the friggin campground the first day instead of riding.
That hole is a bowl vent hole. It equalizes the pressure in the bowl to atmosphere. If you get over/under pressurization, it will mess with your fuel delivery.
The fact that you are getting gasoline spraying out of it leads me to believe you are right in thinking your float is not adjusted right, allowing gas to fill up and get pushed/sloshed out of the hole.
