The rear brake switch is pressure activated via the hydraulic brake line. The switch unit is tucked behind the rear master cylinder (you'll see two wire connectors attached). They go out anywhere from 2-10 years. Fairly simple job to put in a new one, but bleeding the rear brake-line afterwards is a little bit of a task.
