Default Clutch not disengaging

Hello, I have a 1997 883 and I just changed the bars on it from beach bars to 8" buckhorns. The clutch is now not disengaging, but it worked fine before I changed the bars. I proceeded to follow the manual and adjusted the clutch with the adjuster nuts, then I got into the primary and adjusted the screw, and also looked at the plates to see if the ***** were still intact, they were. I'm at a stand still and don't know what is happening, probably something I did wrong while putting the bars on?

Since your new bars are longer, did you get a new clutch cable? Maybe there is too much tension on the clutch cable and it's being pulled too tight?

The cable adjustment ("adjuster nuts") is supposed to be done AFTER you adjust the screw inside the derby cover.

1 - Completely loosen cable adjuster.
2 - Make screw adjustment inside derby cover.
3 - Do the cable adjustment for free-play (cable adjuster nuts).

The bike's just mad at you for putting those buckhorn bars on it.

+1 on what cHarley said.

I was thinking that might be my problem, but there is slack in the cable where if I move the bars then it isn't pulling tight.

I wrote that wrong, my mistake. I followed the directions you wrote, and I still get no response from the clutch.
1. Loosen adjuster cable
2. Make screw adjustment in primary
3. Then do the cable adjustment

I stop my adjustment when the clutch feels good and when there is an 1/8th of an inch distance from the clutch housing and the cable. Am I doing that right?

Sounds about right according to the FSM. How much adjustment are you making in the primary?

I'm tightening the adjuster screw until there is slight tension, then loosening it 1/8-1/2 a turn. While putting on the clutch I accidentaly punctured one of the headlight wires while tigtening on it, the Harley mechanic said there wasn't any relation between the clutch and the electrical. Also he said the problem might be my clutch spring plate, but I'm hesitant to check, though it might come to that.

Why is that? Mine came with about 1/3 turn out when I replaced the cable but the FMS said turn it till it drags then 1/4 more. Just curious

There shouldn't be since the clutch looks mechanical but I could be wrong.

Make sure you are loosening it all the way, then tightening the adjuster screw 1/4 turn. It's the opposite of what a lot of people think, back the screw out all the way until it seats (counter clockwise) then screw it in 1/4 turn (clockwise).
