Yep, Ditto I had problems too sometimes when going from 1st to 2nd. And yes it seems to happen aftwr I have been riding the bike awhile and yes its embarrassing. I think its normal and you just need to shift harder. I will also add that since I switched over to synthetic fluids it happens less and less. My 2 cents.....

My own feelings on that are as follows, after you've been riding for a while, your leg muscles that lift the shifter get tired and it is already an uncommon movement for your foot to lift something in this fashion, with these muscles so you miss a shift. The lowering of the pedal seems to resolve this issue so your leg muscles do not have to lift into such an awkward or un natural position.

If i'm not mistaken (which there's a good chance that I am), then harley's use straight cut gears in the tranny and those require shifting with authority. You need to shift fast and hard or else you can hurt your tranny.

Have you given any thought to relocating the shifter lever one or two splines lower so it lowers the shifter pedal? May help.
I think this is what I will do.

I do have to say I think I never did it before I wore tennis shoes.

It only happens to me when I am really getting on it, So the missed shift turns into a very high rev.

Its very , very , very, embarassing!!!

I am gald to hear I am not the only one. I thought something was wrong with my bike, Like the shifter Pawl need to be adjusted, But when I do pay attentioon and make sure its shifted hard, I dont have this problem.

but I workout with weights every day and muscles are not my problem..but since reading this link, I have been more conscientious about shifting and it still does it - especially after she has warmed up some. So still scratching my head on this one.

The only thing I can think of if you lift weights and you pay close attention and it still does it. Is your Shifter Pawl might need to be adjusted. Its aesy to adjust, its just a pain to get to. You have to take off the primary cover, that means everything comes off , that has to come off to get the cover off. Then you put a I think its a 5/16" I think I am wrong, but a certain size drill bit in there and tighten it down.

Easy fix, its just time consuming and takes a little money for new fluids, gaskets and whatever might go wrong.

Can this be done in reverse, ie, raising the shifting lever? I have one pair of boots (Harley construction type boots w/ steel toe) that make it difficult for me to get my toe under the shift lever, then it becomes a chore to remember to pull it out or else I will not release the gear and be ready for the shift. Guess I do everything in reverse to normal. Art

Ace, I have this same problem but I wear HD boots and just use the lip of the sole of my boot to do the upshifting. It's a lot easier than having to put my foot all the way under all the time.
