Hey yall, i have a late 84 xl 1000 and i got on it today to ride like every other day and i heard what i believe is a lose primary chain...im recently laid off so i need to make adjustment myself can anyone please give me some tips on how to adjust it...im not a idiot just never had to do it before..and i cant find a manual anywhere in town or anyone willing to tell me how to adjust it...so if there is anyone who can explain this to me i would appreciate it...all i find on internet is adjustments for evos this is the last year engine before evo please help thankyou

It should be very simple thing to do, if it's anything like the new bikes there's a shoe under the chain on the bottom side of the Primary. The shoe is on a threaded rod locked with a lock nut, the shoe moves up and down, you simply loosen the nut and turn the rod clockwise to tighten the shoe against the chain, check the free play, and lock the lock nut.
this is the spec for verticle free play measured at the inspection window.

Primary chain free play Cold engine 3/8-1/2 in. (9.6-12.7 mm) Hot engine 1/4-3/8 in. (6.4-9.6 mm)
