Default DIY air cleaner install

So I read this post the other day and decided to give it a try:
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...s-of-pics.html

I wear designer jeans, so I will be going with the K&N E-3120 filter with Outerwears Rainsock designed to fit 4" Joker Machine air cleaners. Essentially this DIY kit is a Joker Machine air cleaner that costs over $120 less. I understand what I need to do to make and install it, my question is about what to do after. I am installing this on my 2012 Iron 883 with V-Twin Manufacturing down slash slipons (baffles removed). I initially wanted to leave the baffles in, but I let my friend convince me to remove them and now they are loud as hell. Ultimately I intend to buy Vance and Hines staggered short shots, but that will be a ways down the road.

What I want to know is what my best and cheapest options are as far as tuning the bike after the air cleaner install. Some time down the road I intend to go with the Dyno Jet Power Commander USB III or similar, but until then can I have the dealership flash the ECM? How much do the dealerships typically charge to do this? Also, is the filter that I will be installing considered a Stage 2 air cleaner?

Any help and advice would be nice as I am still quite new to working on bikes, this being my first one.

I recently also did this mod, that thread is a great write up. I have cycle shack exhaust on my 2012 custom 1200. When i did this mod with the air cleaner I also installed a set of xied's which I purchased online, they are very resonable in price and they DO work great. You can see them on www.nightrider.com brand new I think they are like 99.00 but if you get lucky you can find a used set on one of these forums.

Nice. I think I am going to go with the Vance and Hines Fuelpack. Makes sense for the price and the level of customization, plus I trust the Vance and Hines name and will be eventually getting Shortshots.

The one thing I am unsure about with this install... Is putting one nut on the bolt before putting the cover on really going to prevent it from squishing in? What is to prevent that nut from moving due to vibrations? of is only part of the bolt threaded? I have not gotten my parts in the mail yet in order to be able to check.

I spoke with a Harley dealer other day and they claimed that with slip ons I could put air cleaner on and just flash ecm through them for $150. I don't know..I always hear different ideas. Not saying this guy was right or wrong.

The nut acts as a jam nut. It's not necessary...just a precaution. It doesn't matter if it comes loose anyway. Lately I've been sliding a small sleeve on it instead of the nut.

The dealer download is fine. I have that on my XLN. It's 100 here though. Might want to shop around if you go that route.

I'm also a big fan of the Xied's. Not so much a fan of the piggy back tuners. I take alot of them off of bikes I work on.

With DK's new intake line-up, I can't imagine trying to cheap out in the interest of significant savings, especially with the washer and cross brace restriction SMACK in the middle of the intake tract, though I'm sure it's not enough to be a deal breaker for most performance wise. Either way, the dealer flash is a waste of money. I bought a BRAND NEW PC-V for $150...so I'd think you could find a PC-III or V on the CHEAP. Failing that, XIED's. This would generally not be considered a stage 2 filter. Stage 2 filters seem to be (most likely) unnecessarily HUGE.

BTW, I wear Carhartts.

The cross brace has no ill effect. There is an inherent issue with the CV carb and stock throttle body design as it is...which is why ppl spend so much money on all of the bells & whistles. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but all you are doing is treating the problem instead of fixing the issue.

Decent slip-ons, the DIY air cleaner, Xied's (or dealer download) and a Powernow and you will happily keep pace with the guy that has dropped a ton of coin on his bike (and even more since most likely the fuel mileage has taken a hit)

This is not to start a pissing match. You seem very happy with your piggy-back and that's great. When it all boils down, it's a Sportster...not a high rev inline 4 but you CAN achieve great performance (for a Sportster) for little money.

I have cycle shacks, the diy air filter and xied's and was plesently surprised of how much power the bike has. I am VERY happy with the performance and the sound (it is a little on the loud side but does sound great) And for the combination of the 3 I spent aprox 225.00 total. Talk about bang for your buck !!!

Very similar set-up to what I have on my 883 Sporty.

Cycle Shacks (with TTI's)
Free Flowing filter (DK Outlaw, but probably flows about the same)
X14IED's

You probably picked up about 13% horsepower and 5% torque...pretty good for $255!

Another $25 for the Thunder Torques and you would gain about 5-10% MORE Torque in the low and mid range, plus could quiet it down a bit.
