I did find out that the dealer did the conversion on my bike while it was still in the showroom. Previous owner never knew it, but it says it on the original bill of sale from Fort Lauderdale Harley. Go figure.
I bought a new bike in 1990. The demand for new bikes was so high that year the dealers were told to order up front for the whole year (late 1989-on) and would not be allowed any changes, even for colour. I couldn't get the colour I wanted unless I travelled a long way to get it. It is highly likely they built a number of transitional Sporties, to meet their orders. I don't know that to be true, just offer it as a possible explanation.
It is very likely the easy option will be to fit whatever rear drive the 883s had. You may not have any other options. If you change by more than one tooth, front or rear pulley, you will probably need to change the belt as well. You want a smaller front pulley, or a larger rear. There are never many alternative sizes available, especially for the rear.
