Old book I've got on painting-first step is use a good wax, grease, remover.
alot of the waxes we use has silicone in the wax. According to the book , sanding just drives silicones into what your going to paint.
Painted the muffler yesterday to get the effect of the Rustoleum. It ended up being a couple of shades lighter than what I was expecting but the metallic finish shows nicely.
Put 3 light coats of Rustoleum on followed by 3 coats of Rustoleum Clear Engine Enamel. Going to let it cure a few days then wet sand and buff it. Here's a couple of pics, not sure if they'll show the full effect of the metallic finish in the sun but it was the best I could do with my cell phone.
just an idea , but i saw a powder coated and lacquered tank in the powder coaters workshop yesterday ... i was quite impressed with the finish , obviously not as good as a pro paint job , but about 1/5 of the price ... just a thought if things don't turn out well with the home spray job
