It's going to drive me broke!

It started innocent enough... "Let me put some pullbacks" I said. Pulled the bars off and realized I needed a new front break line... sure, why not...

Then I figured, might as well flip the mirrors... and relocate the turn signals... now about those pesky coils and key? Yea, let's move those too... don't forget the speedo... that's gotta move. And when I thought I was done, I start thinking about putting the DK struts on...

Now, I've only gotten as far as the risers, but the speedo relo is a must at this point and I'm hoping to throw a cheap solution together for the turn signals.

I tried searching and didn't come across any DIYs for the coil and key relo. Is this just not a good idea? I read something about the vibrations causing parts to fall apart eventually and was wondering if it was worth it to just go with the kit.

With that said, I love this damn forum!

Yeah, know what you mean. Plus the Sporty is such a good canvas.

In the years we have been selling and installing Coil & Ignition Relocation kits we have never had a report of either the coil or the switch failing.

We do get an average of one email or call a week from people that have built their own Coil relocation brackets where the bracket has failed.

If you do decide to build your own, make sure to use at least 3/16" mild steel, make sure the welds completely penetrate, and if you bend, use far more material at the bend than you would think is needed...these bikes really get some harmonics going that can fatigue the metal.

On the coil relocation, the DK Custom guy said it right. I made my own bracket and it looked very solid, but the 90 degree bend I made I did not reinforce, and that is what broke. I took it and reinforced the %#$!@ out of it and now my v2 bracket is super sturdy - I have put another 600 miles on it and it's holding strong.
The DK Custom kit looks nice and really isn't priced all that bad considering the time and work I put into mine, but I just love diy work; it's part of the fun for me.
This is my first bike and I'm having a grand time with with it. But I agree, there's just so many cool things we can do as far as customization, and not enough $$$ to do it all!

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I might just bight the bullet and go with the kit from DK. We'll see how this month plays out, it might have to wait till next month. I might do the turn signals first.

thanks

It truly is a disease. I do one little thing, and before you know it I'm chopping and welding all kinds of stuff.
