Welcome aboard from Tucson. The sportster will be a great bike. I have the 1200 C and love it. Found it on ebay. You have to use caution but there can be some good bargains there.

How far can you lower a Sportster?
If you set yours up like mine, you will have no problems at all. Mine almost feels like a toy sometimes with as easy it is to manuever on foot.

883 Custom - Progressive 11" rear shocks - Lowered the front end by slipping the triple trees - 883low solo seat.

When it comes time to do so, I'll walk you through lowering the front end for free. So, my complete lowering mods cost under $300 - shocks new were less than $200 and the seat was about $50 new take-off on ebay.

I'm 5' 8" and ride a 1200c (forward controls) and have no problem whatsoever. Why not go to your local dealership and sit on a few?

Welcome aboard bro.... from Louisiana. I think you'll do well on either a low or a custom. When you climb aboard, your feet should be flat on the ground with the bike straight up. Then see if you can back and turn with good control. If all goes well you probably are sized right.. Be careful with used bikes from private owners....have a knowledgeable person go over the bike thoroughly or have a dealer check it out. Most dealers sell used bikes and will give you a short warranty. Good Luck !

Thanks for all the advice! I plan on going through a dealer, for the warranty, service and the fact that I'll likely have to finance a portion of it. I'm in collegebut make $200/week at my job... I can scratch together a large chunk of it before the summer and liquidate a few extra guitars for more money. My parents are paying for my DMV safety course for my birthday (mom's not too fond of me riding, dad's all for it because he used to ride -- gave it up when he went into the USAF) and other than that, I can't wait. There are three bikers on my block, one who knows Harleys like the back of his hand and the other who can wrench anything without a problem. I doubt I'll have too much difficulty with anything.

ellebee, I appreciate the comment, which I'll take as a compliment. Most people confuse me for about 25-26 based on the way I act and just figure I look young for my age. That's not the case, but it might have something to do with why my friends call me 'Dad'

Thanks for all the warm wishes, and I hope to learn a bit more from you guys.

I plan to go sit on some Sporty's soon, but the nearest dealer is about a 30 minute drive. This week is a bit hectic, but I shall try soon.

Tim, at 5' 8" you don't need a lowSportster, unless you like the looks. Like bdavis says, go sit on a few. Foward controls look cool, but if you want to flog that bike, you will want mids. Lowering works OKfor a city boys, but if you ride crappy country roads you might consider taller shocks.

Thanks for a few more heads ups. I'm still on the search, nothing major at this point yet.

As far as roads: here in NJ they're all pretty good. Some aren't fun in cages let alone on a bike, I can imagine, but the majority is pretty good.
