I get it some times. A friend at work said that about a month ago.
We went for a ride. I leave him in the canyons and beat him off the line. He doesn't say it anymore.
When I started riding the 1200 Goldwing was the biggest bike made. Now a 1200 is considered small. It took me almost 20 yrs to cross the 1000cc like. I might get a solftail someday, but if I do it will be for the bigger touring platform.
I also have an 883 and I have gotten some slack for it. Usually from other Harley guys they say things like "Welcome to HD" or "You gotta start somewhere". From those crotch Rocket guys I always get "Mines 1000cc" or something like that.
Either way, whatever the statement is I just smile and laugh. I love my bike and I ride the hell out of it, its MY bike, no one elses.
Funny story, my buddy has a Suzuki GSXR, he loves to give me crap that my bike is too small. So one day after I had enough of his crap, I told him "I bet your girl would be happier on my bike than on yours!" to further prove my point I offered his gf to take a quick spin around the block on my Sportster (nothing else happened, it was just a ride around the block) after the ride she gets off smiling and she says to my friend "You need to get one of these". So holding back as much laughter as possible I look at my buddy and say "It might be small but she sure enjoyed the ride" the look on his face was priceless!
Look at it this way; the Sportster is the longest continually running line in HD history, and it created the "muscle bike" segment that others follow today. You own one because that's what you wanted. If they don't like it they can cough up the cash to buy something they like (if they even ride at all) or go pound sand.
Oh yeah, people like to give us 883 guys a hard time. The funny part is 95% of them see me bike and say that's a 1200 right?...you just have to tell them to screw off. I personally love me bike and it didn't cost an arm and a leg...and that makes it even more fun to ride. Couple guys at work pick on me about it, I just tell them they ride old geezer Harleys.
