I just use the cheap foam ones that work great. Something to note if your riding with any helmet behind a windshield your noise level goes up substantially. I've also found riding without a helmet is less noisy then with a helmet behind a windshield especially with a 1/2 helmet.
Noticed by simply putting my hand to my ear, the wind noise stopped completely. Seems the turbulence over your ears is a lot of the problem, even with ear plugs in.
I've been riding a long run to visit my family more recently, and was here looking for alternatives to earplugs. I'm curious if you actually tried these out, and what you thought of them.
I've actually been using them for a week now. Mostly riding on surface streets going to and from work. Once only on a quiet evening, I went on the freeway and rode at 65 for a few mins. So FWIW here's my impression:
they do prevent wind turbulence around your ears so that you can enjoy the sewing machine noise better
to be effective, the pads need to be pressed against your ears, so you will be strapping your helmet pretty tightly.
the pads are fairly thick and soft.
you get 4 strips of Velcro that you stick to the inner side of your straps (one on each limb of the V parts). The sticky part's glue is a bit weak. I am not sure how long mine will last.
I like them, so I'll be using them cuz they cut enough noise for me.
Just switched from 3/4 to 1/2 helmet and wow I can't believe how much louder everything is. Engine noise, wind noise. On helmets without ear covers what do you guys use as ear protection at highway speeds?
i get the rubbery finned kind from Walgreens, withawith string to keep around your neck.

I use an insertable infantry ear plugs I kept from my artillery days. I use it mostly when I'm keeping it around town and using my 1/2 helmet. On longer rides I wear my 3/4 with the visor that folds down almost turning it into a full.
Get these...
These work WAY better then anything else I've tried.
Wind noise is reduced tremendously and they're cheap.
Walmart carries them at a cost of about four bucks.
I highly recommend them.
