I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue with my cap from J&P Cycles (part no 7500108), bought for my 2012 iron. You say you bent the tube backwards? As far as I can see, that would bring it nearer the pop-up mechanism in the centre of the cap? Anyway, I have tried bending both directions, and it stops at the same point either way. I thought it might screw down a little further each time if I did it little by little, but there seems to be no difference. Problem is I can't even make out where it is fouling - I have looked for small scrapes on the cap or tube, but there is nothing obvious. Any further ideas anyone?
Ok, if you're 100% sure it's the vent tube you can trim it a bit. I do not have a vent tube it's welded shut. Just don't overfill your tank since the vent tube will then work overtime
Follow-up to this - I contacted J&P Cycles - quote from their reply "I must apologize for the fitment error that caused you to purchase the Black Flush Mount Fuel cap for your 2012 XL883N. With one exception the 04 and later Sportsters use a different fuel cap. Because of that, the cap you received, 7500108, won't fit. Unfortunately the flush mount fuel cap for your fitment is a part we don't have access to. For you to get one you will have to go to your local Harley Davidson dealer"
Weird, I thought, since it seems to fit SOME peoples Irons. I placed the OEM cap next to it, and it looks to me as if the thread on the pop-up is very slightly narrower, which would account for it going in part way and jamming at the same spot each time. Even weirder... Anyway they have promised to give me a refund, which leaves me looking for a cool-looking wrinkle-black gas cap again.
Here is what I have found out about some ebay sellers, they sell the item saying it will fit a curtain bike, then when you get it and find out it does not, it takes them twice as long to contact you and when they do they will tell you to ship it back at your expense, after they receive it there will be a restocking fee and then they will return the left over funds- problem is usually the money returned after deducting the shipping is under half of what you paid.
It is far better to know what you're buying and to look at their return policy before sending money.
I saw a hidden cap at the dealership for the first time one day and I know I looked like an idiot trying to open it. It was chrome but it looked nice...until I read how they can get "stuck". That stopped me right there.
