Default More Speedo Problems

I here the speedos are pretty bad on sportster, my 2006 1200c is stored outside, I understand many times problems are caused by wet/rusted fuses, over the past few days I have noticed my sercurity light has been staying on a few seconds after I start the motor, it worked fine this morning but this afternoon my speedo was dead and the security light was on when I started the motor and didn't start working until about 15 miles later. It's raining right now so i cant clean the fuses. But is that the most likely problem? I tried a search but it is absolutely not working, must be a software bug. Motor ran fine otherwise.

I cleaned my fuses but I'm still having occasional problems, today the speedo locked up at 30 mph and wouldn't turn off even with the ignition key in the off posistion, I had to restart the motor & turn it off again to get the speedo to reset and turn off. it locked up again later at 70 mph but started workign again in a few seconds. The needle will lock up on a random speed and I will also have the security light and check engine light come on and the odometer will go half blank and be unreadable.

I assume the speedo is the problem, atleast I hope it's not something more serious,

If one day the sppedo completely dies or gets really bad, should I try to get another Harley unit or should I just get the Dakota Digital. These HD units apparently have some kind of design flaw, if I were to buy a new one from a dealer, would it stop working after 6,000 miles too?

I installed one of these 3 months ago, but I dont think it would interfere with the speedo in anyway.,although maybe one of th wires on this gauger is touching the housing, That's something I should check.
, although I only having problems about once a week now so it must be something electrical inside the speedo unit.

I searched some old posts, read that it could be the Vehcile Speed Sensor, I took it out and it looked perfect, I dont think it would be causing the odometer display to go half out, so I'm still thinking my problem is with the Speedo.

Question: If I buy a used Harley unit say with 15,000 miles, will my ECM automatically update the correct mileage on the replacement Speedometer to show the correct mileage of 6,000?

No, the mileage info is actually stored in the speedo.

06sporty75, The speedo on my Heritage did the same thing over a long period of time, I think it is in the electronics (reset pulse for the speedo); I change out to a Dakota speedo with all the bells and whistles. If ya gonna upgrade, upgrade big. The new speedo works really well, although my bikes a 96 I did use all of the Dakota features.

Cheers

06sport75, that should read "although my bikes a 96 I didn't use all of the Dakota features".
