Default Installing new chain. Your .02 please

My rear tire is as far back as it will go. Mechanic said I needed a new chain. I agree. Chain was around 20+ bucks so what the heck. I connected the new chain to the old one and fed it around with the rear tire as far forward as possible with maybe 1/4 inch gap. Marked my chain. Fed old chain back on for now. I took the new chain to my work bench and TRIED beating the pin out with a heavy hammer & punch. Any pointers or should I just wait til Tuesday when the shop is open and take it in for them to press it out?

First , thank you for your service.

you should use a grinder to cut the brad off one side of the new chain.
( can file it , but will take a long time )
then use a punch /hammer and it will knock right out.
BTW , where did you get a 20 dollar chain ???
my 'O' ring chain cost 80 + for bulk...

'O ' ring will last longer than 4-5 conventional chains , and no mess

There are two techniques I use on sportbike chains. You can buy a little tool called a chain breaker, it just pushes the pins out of the link on a riveted chain. The other option, more fun and redneck, is to grab an angle grinder and just grind off the ends until you can punch them through.

I searched e-bay for chain break, then chain brake for harley. 14.00 vise 140.00 WTF? Looks like the 14 dollar press would do the same job.

Was thinking of breaking out the dremel, yeah I'm sure that's made in China but I use it for everything. Need to use the car today, so I'll just wait till the harley shop is open and have them press it out.
