Have 1999 1200S. Been running really bad. (Backfiring while riding, low power etc.) I checked the air filter, replaced the four spark plugs and put my exhaust gaskets in. And still runs crappy. Neighbor came by and said, Feel your front cylinder". It was cold. What should I check next? Ignition coil, plug cables? (Weird thing also: when i hit the choke, the other cylinder would kick on)
Air, fuel and spark. I'd start checking spark, it's the easiest. Pop off the plug boot, stick the tip of a screwdriver in(plastic handle) and hold the shaft of the screw driver so it's just hovering above the jug, close enough to arc. Now it would be good if you had a friend to help you with cranking it, if the coil/wire are good you should be able to see it sparking on the engine.
EDIT: just saw the comment about firing with the choke, most likely eliminates spark but still wouldn't hurt to check.
A trick we would always do was spray some starting fluid (or anything flammable) around the suspected leak area. If you get a sudden rise in RPM it's because it sucked it in and ignited it. Be careful that the engine isn't too hot.
