Default Quick Carb Adjustment Question

Over the weekend, I managed to switch out the slow jet on my carb with a .42 jet, after realizing that a .44 was too much. I did it to try to aleiviate the hesitation/carb 'pops' when I take off. (only mod related is a K&N air filter filter and kit; it was 'popping even before the mod).

I also put in the EZ Adjustment screw. That was a good move in hindsight!

Question, 'cause I just want to confirm it: When tuning the carb when warm, you turn it in until it stumbles, then 1/8 turn it out to start? I ask because I can't make it stumble, which is making me slightly nervous. I am getting some 'pops' in mid-range now, but nothing at the 'starting off' end.

Turn Out = richer?
Turn In = leaner?

Right?

Yep. But if you have a Stage 1 A/C and not just a K&N filter in the stock can, a 44 or 45 pilot jet is typically about right.

Start with the bike at normal operating temperature and the mixture screw turned out 2.5 - 3 turns and the idle speed turned down as low as it will go without stalling, then turn the mixture screw in until the motor starts to stumble, then turn it back out 1/4 turn.

If the mixture screw has to be turned out more than 3.5 turns to get it to idle properly, you need to go up a size on the pilot jet. A 44 is a non standard aftermarket jet size. Standard CV jet sizes are 42 - 45 - 48.

Thank you cHarley!

I do have the K&N backing plate and gear. Part of what I was missing in the procedure is the idle sped adjustment. Looking at my shop manual, I've found it at least. Is it a bugger to get at with everything installed though?

No, just get a decent length screwdriver and you can get right at it.

So far, so good. Everything's in place and now it's just a matter of minor adjustments. Idling beautifully and will run perfectly with the choke out at an 1/8th of an inch out. I'll just work it 1/8th turns in until it's set.

Thanks for the help!
