So what would you guys say is the max total two up weight that a 2011 1200 C can handle without any issues?
I am 220 and my wife 130 and when I ride two up I set the shock preload to the max setting of 5 and the bike seems to have enough power and handles the weight OK but I was wondering what the real max load on this bike is.
I'm also 220 and my passenger is just shy of yours and on my 883 it does pretty well. The only exception is on hills where it seems to work hard. I agree that 350-400lbs is probably what it's rated for with the stock shocks. Upgrade the shocks/springs to something like the Progressive HD 412 and I bet it would be rated for an additional 40-60lbs.
and if you are concerned, its not hard to increase our HP on this bike... (pipes and sucker- with tuner)
as to 2 up issues, i think that the stock seat and shocks need to go-
my fav for 2 up is the wide mustang combined with 1" longer shocks using works performance (they custom build them for your weight)- i also changed the front shock oil and used a weight that is between stock and screaming eagle.
I agree that 350-400lbs is probably what it's rated for with the stock shocks.
It's not the shocks that are rated really, but the bike itself. The axles, frame, swingarm, etc. can't take the stress the weight adds.
I'm sure it is over-engineered, but exceeding the GVWR even with shocks that can handle it is adding undo stress to the vehicle. In time something will break.
