Default Newbie 1200 custom

Just getting used to bike -- moved up from 250 rebel so power is insane!
Also my feet keep dropping to mid, but think I will like forward controls once used to them

I have parts ordered so will soon have a med back rest and detach windshield and engine bars

I'm 5'7 165, like handlebars where they are for now.. Any other suggestions for must have mods??

Just trying to get comfortable and used to it right now.. What an awesome honeymoon though!

Thanks in advance -- jeff

first zip tie your battery cover on before it falls off....you will need different shocks sooner or later and front springs in the forks for a much better ride.....ENJOY..

Really about the battery cover?

Went for a short ride tonight, man I love it, but I did roll over a nice little pavement bump and got a nice kick in the a$$.. Guess thats the sport in sportster!

Oh, have heard after a while will prob want a diff seat ... Sundowner? Def don't want anything to up the height though.. I can get flat feet to ground now.. But any higher and I'm on the toes!

Welcome from NY & Congrats!

Check what setting your rear shocks are on. Mine's set at 4, but I'm heavier.

Pics?

Put a bunch of miles on it and look around to decide what you really want before you end up with a pile of parts to change and don't want anymore

"must have mods" on my bike (also plenty of other mods that are not quite as "must have")- my goal was to make my sporty a great around town bike that i could easily convert to the big road when i want to:

Vance & Hines straight shots HS pipes
Arlen Ness air cleaner cover over
Doherty Machine Power PACC air cleaner
Techlusion Fuel Injection Control Module (TFI Fuel management system)
Bar & shield LED rear brake light
Smoked bullet lens kit front turn signals
Red bullet lens kit rear turn signals
Oil temperature gauge/ dipstick
Mustang Wide Studded Seat
Lindby "Linbar" bar
Mini Beast Horn (128 db)
Auxiliary Triple head lights
Front turn signal relocation kit
Lay down license plate & rear turn signal relocation kit
EZ Brackets
Works Performance rear shocks
2 sets of bags- Willie & Max regular size- also set of large bags
GPS mount & removable GPS (Garmin Zumo 550)
Removable windshield
Pigtail for battery maintenance
Superbrace

btw, the front springs are fine, imo- i did change out the front shock oil to screaming eagle, but that was too stiff for one up (works great for two up)... so i am replacing that with an oil in between stock and screaming eagle next week.

The battery cover is an older issue IIRC. My 2010 cover has never came off.

At your weight the stock suspension could be okay, you can decide. A better seat might do.

Congrats on the new ride, Jeff. My first new motorcycle was a CM200T back in 1980. I rode that bike year round for 2.5 years before some Xerox copier repair man in a station wagon totaled it for me. My last ride was a 1981 CM400C, which I sold about six weeks ago and bought a used Sportster a couple of weeks later.

The most useful piece of equipment on that bike for me that wasn't stock is the tach. That nasty habit of shifting at 3500-4500 rpms and cruising at 5000+ rpms dies hard. I find myself constantly checking the tach just to make sure that I'm in the correct range and not running at redline.

If you need to get a tach, the 1200 uses the same HD tach as the 883 and hooks up identically.

Here's the list of things that I wish the Sportster had that were standard on all of my rice burner street bikes: tach, center stand, trip meter and helmet lock.

Putting miles on it is the best way to figure out the changes you need.
