Thinking about switching to solid state voltage regulator
1975 XLH-1000. It isn't charging. I'm having trouble with the charging system. Thinking about switching the VR to a solid state. Seeking any advise about the best place to get one.
My 1974 FX had a solid state VR when I bought it new. Harley was one of the very first bike manufacturers to use them! I suspect yours had one as well, unless it has been changed over the years. Any of the usual suppliers should have one, like J&P or your local indy.
Check out the electronic rectifying regulators from Cycle Electric. Unlike the shitty shunt type regulators Harley still uses which cause the stator to run at 100% load full time, the CE regulators switch off stator current when its not needed letting the stator run cool and without the excessive load on the motor.
