Got the SE slip-ons for Christmas. Going to get the SE air cleaner. I've done allot of research on the SERT and other fuel adjusters, for not to much more $, why not instead of just an ECM remap? What do you all think? Is it worth it? Thanks. Dave
It's only worth it if you are going to mess with the fuel map a lot. If you plan to do it once and leave it alone, then it is not worth it. I am also assuming that you will be happy with the Harley remap (may not be true).
If you are stopping at the Stage 1 air-cleaner, exhuast upgrade, the remap is a proven way to enhance performance. Sporty_2007 had great dyno results with his upgrades using the HD remap...I doubt if you'll do better (and could do worse) using a SERT (race tuner).
The SERT will allow changing the red-line (despite what many will try to say, the dyno results I have seen show hp increases to about 6500 rpm). If you don't mind spending the $, the SERT is the way to go. I am still awaiting the dyno repair at the dealer (the bikes still there!) so if you are open to waiting, I should have dyno results from my Stage 1 SERF (race fueler) route.

As mentioned above, i had real decent results with a stage 1 upgrade and used aan HDReMap with mine. The plan was to try it andperform a baseline dyno before and after the remap to see if we could achieve good results, and if not, we would then connect a SERT and test a few maps out until the desired performance was achieved. As luck had it, we ran the HD ReMap for their SE Exhaust and SE A/C Kit, and it was dead on. There was a net pick up of 16HP and 6ft-lbs of Torque. With that working as well as it did, we left well enough alone and I am very happy with this setup considering the torque band was instant, and the majority of the pickup was from 4000 to 6500 rpm.
The cost was about a third of the Race Tuner costs when you consider the setup and tuning time associated with tweaking the SERT. I'd say the above is true...if your going stage 1 and you don't plan on mucking with the setup on a regular basis, then get the ReMap which works just awesome with a stage 1 kit. The only difference for me was that we installed the V&H slip ons which reportedly make slightly better power due to increased flow over SE exhaust. Thats still a debate at this point and I would think either exhaust will work fine. Let us know what you end up doing, and if you run a few dyno tests, be sure to post your sheets here.
When I had mine done back in November,(SE A/C and remap) I was quoted a price of $428 including labor, when I paid the bill I was charges $224, seems like they gave me the remap for free, ($149). Which I was very happy to pay, and it helped the performance of my scooter. Just wish I'd done the dyno, to see how much it improved.
I asked my local harley dealer about a remap for my '04 883 and they just laughed at me, stating that there is no such thing. ? So, can I do the remap for my XL883 that you guys are talking about or ?
XLOCD, your signature reminds me of a poster my dad had in his office before he retired. It said,
"Wanted: A wife that can cook, clean and owns a boat. PS: Please send pictures of the boat".
You dealer was right there is no remap for a 04 sportster. Remaps are only for FI bikes while rejets are for carbed bikes. Remaps tend to cost $150. Rejets tend to cost $10 in parts.
