As this will be your first bike, are you dead set on getting a 1200? Lots of guys are more than happy with 883s. And there are lots of super clean low mileage 883s out there.
You can always add a 1250 kit later too.
Just remember, a few years ago a 750 was considered a big bike.
Doug, with your bike the simplest and most economical way is to use a kit from someone like NRHS, who will supply replacement cylinders with pistons and gaskets. Use search to find recent threads about NRHS, including a blow by blow description with photos! Also check their website. Any local indy should be able to supply and fit, but read those threads to get the whole picture of what you need.
Just bought a 2005 XL 1200C SportsterŽ 1200 Custom for $4,000, 14K on it but, it really looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. Screaming eagles pipes and all upgrades/maintenance are done by a dealership.
