I just got a 00 1200s and I have a rev limiter question. Can someone tell me what the factory limiter is set at? Mine acts like it hits around 55 - 6k does that sound right or am is it to low? Thanks, Dave
I read the other day that reaching the "rev limiter" causes bad things. What happens? I can understand not burning the fuel, maybe fouled plugs? What else?

It doesn't cause bad things unless the limiter is set too high. The point of the rev limiter is to prevent the motor from running too fast for the valvetrain and pistons that are in it.
Our bikes don't have the valvetrain or light pistons to sustain RPMs over about 6000 or so (give or take a little) without getting piston slap, valve float, and so on.

Hitting the rev limiter simply cuts off the ignition (spark), but as soon as the RPMs drop into the safe range as the result of ignition loss, the ignition starts firing again. This fast on/off switching of the ignition makes the motor feel like it has a bad, rapid, stutter until you let off the throttle. Unless someone's an idiot and continues to keep it in the rev limiter "zone", occasionally hitting the limiter doesn't really hurt anything.
I twisted my throttle the other day just to see what I had. I've taken off the tach due to the cable passing over the exhaust "cross-tube?" I hit 80+mph and it started surging/backing off. I hope I described that correctly. I'm only assuming that was my rev point. I backed off and she runs fine. I may have to re-install the tach and do it again just to see where it's set. I do know that the Crane Hi4 is factory set. I've not ****ed with it. So, maybe ya'll would know what it's set at? Thanks to ALL that have set me straight since I got my bike up and running.
Thanks cHarley! I didn't refresh my page until after I wrote this comment. Yours poped up after I wrote this. Then re-read Scuba's post. So mine is relatively around 6K rpm?
