Sportster problems
A friend of mine has a 89 XL and it has been "coughing" out the carb for a little while. We have rebuilt the carb and adjusted the timing the best we could with out a timing light. It has been slowly getting worse and today it stalled while we were riding and then kept stalling after that and now wont stay running.
I am thinking it might be the ignition pick up because at idle the tach will randomly droop off to 0 for a split second then go back to normal.
Thoughts?

Sure it's not something electrical like bad connector at the coil. I had an issue where the 90* connector was just slightly loose and it would give me the spitting/sputtering like it was out of gas with the speedo jumping from 0 to 65 mph & the speedo lights/milage flickering. The coughing could be from the gas that was shot into the engine not gettting burned until the spark comes back. I also, had similar issue when my negative battery cable broke at the solder/crimp point on the frame.

Well while putting in the new ignition switch last night he found the wire that runs from the soliniods/relays to the negative of the batt was only holding on by 3 brass wires and when he touched it it broke off. Hoping that is it.
