Question Cold Engine running issues

I have an 06 883 that I just finished getting on the road(salvage bike). The bike runs ok when warm but does not like to run right when it's cold. I changed the grips on the bike and adjusted the cables according to the service manual. The symptoms I have are bogging when accelerating (likes about 1/2 choke) as well as a hiccup once in a while even at highway speeds ~60mph. Sometimes it backfires through the carb. I have not cleaned the carb but did run some Sea foam through it as well as 93 octane gas. The bike had Vance and Hines pipes on it and I am not sure if it was re jetted. Is it possible the carb is dirty or did I not adjust something properly. The bike probably sat for abut a year. Thanks.

Sounds like a carb problem,if it sat for a year without the fuel being stabilized the carb probably needs to be cleaned.

Yeah clean the carb and run a couple tankfuls of 93 octane. While cleaning the carb check to see if it was re jetted and also check the idle mixture screw (see if the plug was drilled out) I'd hold off on adjusting the carb until you clean it and run fresh gas thru, could just be that the old gas from it sitting gummed everything up.

Scuba10 how do I verify the jetting? I will try to get the carb cleaned asap and hopefully get a few more rides in before winter hits here in the northeast.

Sounds to me, solely based on your description, that you're not letting the bike warm up properly.

You look at the numbers on the jets and make sure they match what they should be for your setting.

Carbed Sporties will cough, spit and hack until warmed up. Nature of the beast.

your running lean, I experienced everything you said until I adjusted the air/fuel screw and it ran way better

I good clue on if it's been rejetted without taking anything apart...Look underneath the carb and see if the air/fuel adjustment screw still has a plug in it
