Can water get into my primary transmission oil through the transmission breather tube?
We drove in heavy rain for 2 hours and the next time using the bike the clutch felt like it was acting up. We opened the inspecton cover and found water in the case. We have read where it could be a short fender sending water towards the clutch adjuster boot cover. An odd thing happened same trip with my left boot which was covered with a Harley boot gaiter was drenched whereas my right boot stayed dried so water was coming at the bike more from the left.
Any ideas what could have caused this?
How much water? Mixed up like mayo or just clear water? Seems unlikely the breather tube could ingest water, but "heavy" rain could be anything. I can't see how it would get into the cable adjuster. Do you mean the chain inspection cover? Is this a Sportster?
Welcome aboard.

Yes there was actual clear water inside the inspection cover about a teaspoon amount and the oil was conjeled around the cover edges that resembled mayo (real ewey). It is a 2007 sportster low.
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. If water can get into the chaincase, then oil can get out! If you have an oil leak, then the source of water may have been rain, but I doubt it. It is more likely to be from condensation. When was the primary oil last changed?
Hi I had a new clutch put in June (new oil of course) and replaced the oil again Aug 12 because it was looking really dirty in a few weeks of riding which I also went on a 6000km trip, and I thought that the oil should have looked cleaner for longer than it did. There has been no oil leaks anywhere that can be seen.
Not sure if I mentioned it is a 1200L and I put 60,000km on it in the 3 years I owned it. This is the first water issue noticed but we haden't opened the case up after a major rain before this time and I have driven in some really bad storms.
The bike last year started chocking up than taking off which was thought to be a fuel injecton problem so we started adding fuel injector cleaner once in a while, than the next thought was bad gas issue since it didn't happen all the time, now I am thinking maybe this water has been there before and the above could be a water issue.
