The following chart lists several popular tires used on Sportsters and the tire manufacturers recommended inflation pressures when installed on a Sporty.
I've run all of the below on my Sporty except for the new Michelin Commander II's. I'm currently running the Dunlop E3's.

Thanks man, so I guess it is 30, which I found to be too low and sucks for handling

If you notice, the 401 tire has a much higher max pressure rating (41 psi). There shouldn't be any problem running it a couple of pounds higher than the 30 psi recommended in the OM. I think Harley recommends the stock tires a bit on the soft side for the sake of a better (softer) ride, rather than for best handling.
I run 40 P.S.I. on front & rear tires. My last tires where when I'd bought the bike new and just replaced. They 13,700 on them running 40 psi. I'll run 40;psi with these new I have now!!!!
Run mine at @ 35psi each (stock dunlops with tubes). Tires glide a little better, and the bike corners a little better(I feel like I get just a tad bit more lean angle)
I always add a few PSI to whatever the owners manual recommends. It's always better to have a little more air in the tires than less and the pressure always goes down.
