Default Do I need a rebuild? 883 sportster

Into my first bobber build. Using a 92' Sportster 883. Planning to move it up to a 1200 if the budget allows.

Question 1: Is there a tell tell sign the motor needs rebuilt? I have it torn down for the most part and the pistons have lots of carbon build up. I'm not a motor guy.

Question 2: If I do the easy 1200 conversion, it's just bolting on new heads and pistons right? No need to replace the cam?

Thanks in advance.

The easy 1200 build is actually just changing the cylinders, pistons, ignition and jets. No need to change heads or cams.

I converted my 883 with only 3800 kms on the engine and one of the piston tops already had a lot of carbon buildup on it.

Carbon build up is just the nature of the beast. If it's not burning oil or making any unusual sounds it likely doesn't need rebuilt however if your building the bike from the ground up it won't hurt to freshen up the engine.

I only rode the bike around the block before I started tearing it down. It did smoke a little. Sounds like if I have it tore down, I should replace....??? what would you guys recommend replacing?

I would just put on the 1200 kit and go with it... if it smoked before you may have that fixed with the new jugs and pistons. Unless the bike was ran for a while with no oil, I wouldn't worry about the bottom end. Replacing the valve stem seals in the heads won't hurt.
