I know a few guys with 1200's that pull trailers. One guy I know has pulled a pop up tent trailer all over the country with his Sporty. Trailer weighs in about 350 lbs fully loaded.
I have close to 100k miles pulling trailers with Twin Cams, but none with Sportys. That said, I would not hesitate to pull a light weight cargo trailer with a 1200...I probably would not go over about 250 lbs fully loaded.
There are a few really important things to address when pulling a trailer with a bike, but once you get them down, it becomes second nature.

Guess anything's possible, I won't even carry a passenger on my Sporty. Adventure HD says trailer hitch voids the warranty on a BT, something to consider.
My fried tows a trailer with his vintage cb750four and a side car... I am pretty sure that back in the day when a BT was a 1200ish and that was a "big" bike you will be ok.
I would however proceed with caution because pulling a trailer is all about loading I properly... Ie: tounge weight... Ect
