Wow. A 20 year old bike. Too cool. I have newer bikes, but I'm hoping that my newer Sporty lasts me until I can't ride any longer, which I expect will be in another 10-20 years.
My Kubota tractor I bought in 04 had to have the carb rebuilt. It was brand new. Reason was I left the bad gas sit.
Personally, I would put something like Sea Foam or Stabil to stabilize the gas if I am not running it for over a month.
Thankfully, most of my stuff (only lawn equipment isn't) is EFI. Every few years, I pull the injectors for cleaning. Same with cars.
I run E10 simply because I can't get better around here.
I run whatever the manufacturer suggests for octane. I can't hear each and every ping so unless I hook up something to the ECM to read detonation, I can't know it unless it is real bad.
I usually run some Stabil in my stuff if it's going to sit up for a while. I run Seafoam through everything every couple of months for the hell of it. I like Seafoam it's proven itself for me a few times.
I just had my injectors on the jetskis tested. Seafoam didn't clean them and there was work to be done. So stabilizing fuel, probably. Cleaning injectors, don't know how much was done or how much was not done. Easier to yank them every 4 years after the season and have them tested and cleaned. Less than $20 per injector

If using ethanol fuel you shouldn't have to clean anything. The alcohol keeps everything pretty clean. Gum is due to the fuel phase separating. Which is easy to prevent by treating fuel with stp fuel stabilizer and engine cleaner,or seafoam,or stabil.
Gummed up carbs is due to neglect, period. As long as the fuel moves,or is treated that should be a non issue.
Seafoam is great stuff but now I've fount an stp version in the same type can. Works way better in the crankcase for sludge,as per the instructions it needs less to do the same job so I'm assuming it's a stronger product.
Either way it's a maintenance issue,not a fuel issue.
