Is this subject not covered in the owners manual , what to put where ? Go from that and make your choice . With the search button you will be overwhelmed with all the info on this subject . Let"s make this simple. As per book , pick what brand you choose. Change fluids, RIDE, ENJOY, And repeat at consistent intervals . Thats all there is to it .

I actually didn't get one with the bike.
I called the dealer today tho and they have one from a 2012 883 they are gonna give me. I imagine everything's the same.

Yeah you'll be fine. The service manuals will cover a range of years.

That's what I was guessing.
Thanks again.

That's fine for oils. However, if you want to save some money, you can run Mobil1 15W-50 (yes, the car stuff) in the engine. It's about $5/qt and offers the same protection as the VTwin.

And the 75W-90 Gear Oil is okay as well since it is equivalent in viscosity to a 20w-50. Any concerns on yellow metal safety are answered in this thread. Mobil doesn't use the same formulation they did when GL-5 oils first came out many years ago.

Is it ok to mix? Mobil 1 in engine and Harley Formula+ oil in trans?

i could be wrong its been a few years since i owned a sporty
On a Sporty, your motor oil is separate from the Primary/tranny oil.

For the motor, any good 20w-50 is fine. It does NOT need to be an $$$ "boutique" V-Twin labeled oil. V-Twin oil is made for those bikes that have a single oil supply that is shared between the motor, primary and tranny.
Mobil-1 15w-50 (automotive) synthetic can be had at most Walmarts in a 5 quart jug for ~$27.00.

For the primary/tranny - Harley's recommended Formula+ is an ~80 "weight" Gear Oil.
There are some unsafe Gear Oils that can harm the stator do to their corrosive nature, but many others are safe.
For a list of safe Gear Oils see THIS THREAD. Any oils with a 1A or 1B classification are non-corrosive and safe for use in the primary/tranny.

That thread of yours is what convinced me it is okay to run the 75W-90 when I was hesitant to before. I would have been running the 15W-50 sooner, but it wasn't available at Walmart again until this past summer, and it cost the same as V-Twin if you buy it at somewhere like NAPA or Advance Auto.

I know what everyone says about the "safe" GL-5 oils but I just don't buy it.

There are quite a few people using those oils that have replaced their stators every 20-25k miles
