I can only speak from my experience with my 4.5 gallon 1200C. ButI've found that my light comes on with about 1.5 gal. left in the tank.
My XL1200C light has come on 3 times since I purchased the bike 1 1/2 weeks ago. 2 of them were legit and match the above: I added 3 gallons of gas, so it came on within about 1.5 gallons left in the tank. I am currently getting about 37.5 mpg. Since this is breakin, I am not worried about the mpg. However, it came on after I filled up for the 2nd time and had gone less than 37 miles. I turned the bike off/on and the low fuel light reset.

Sounds like a sensor or programming issue to me.I don't know if it goes through a module or not but it sounds the same as some issues cars have had.

Gauge/light on my FX is the same. Many stories about the gauges not being a reliable device. Apparently it’s a pretty item but functionality lacks for them. Then again, better it reminds you too early than too late. Best option I've heard to date is to run the bike down to empty/near empty and take note of the mileage. Ignore the light and go by miles and an occasional peak into the tank. This is my one complaint about EFI…no reserve petcock. Manual reserve guarantees you have some fuel left even if you lose track of how many miles you traveled.

Yeah, if it's going to be this unreliable, I wish there was some aftermarket petcock one could add for that sort of thing.

My latest today: The light came on at 66.9 miles or so -- I'm not sure when it exactly came on. I actually saw it as I had just exited the freeway and this exit had a bit of curve so I had to lean on the left (if this means anything about the upright thing). When I got upright and stopped at the red light, the low fuel warning was on and the mileage read 66.9. The green light came on rather quickly, so after about a mile I stopped on the side of the road and I shut off the bike removed the key and started while upright, the light seem to go off for about 30 seconds then came back on. So I'm pretty convinced this does not work for the sporty, at least not for the 2007.

I have run my 05 1200C out of gas to see how far I can go before I need to switch over to reserve and never saw a warning light? It just coughed a little.I use my trip meter.

I have exactly the same deal with my 07 1200R. Got 80 miles and it took just over 2 gal. to fill. As long as it's consistent, that's fine with me.

I have a fatboy, but my light used to cme on real early asd well. When I swapped tanks, they rebent the fuel arm thing, and it is now a lor more accurate. This is a common porblme on any motorcycle with a gas guage. I think if you take it for warranty they will rebend the arm. I still keep track by my mileage or odometer anyway. that is what I have always done in the past...

Jalopy, I tried your suggestion about trying to reach 120, but only got to about 90 miles before it started to stall whenever I went up a steep hill or leaned. At about 94 miles it started to cough while upright and level road, I had to fill up - no choice at that point. When I refilled, I got 2.37 gallons in, which means I still had about about a gallon left. In my opinion I shouldn't have been caughing and stalling yet. It's acting as if the gallon is the reserve and at this point switch to it via the petcock...which doesn't exist.

I am curious, and I will tell you all why if you guys try it.... Those of you with 2007 that have the fuel light come on way too early, try taking the gas cap off then just put it back on and see if that makes it go away.... I think I have a thoery.

Ok, I'll give it a try and report back.

I think I know where you're going with this.
