Default Did i really screw up?

had removed my exhaust mounting bolts from my bike in an attempt to remove them to wrap my pipes. when i put them back on i never put any thread lock on the bolts...now that my pipes are wrapped AROUND the heat shields i can't get a ratchet into the small space exposing the mounting bolts. do i have to unwrap my shields now, removed the shields, then remove the nuts to apply thread lock or is that more precautionary?

Don't use thread locker on your exhaust nuts.

As Machinistmate said, don't use threadlock on the exhaust nuts. If anything, add some star locking washers or switchout with aircraft locking nuts, (you'll have do a search or PM cHarlie as to where he gets his). The heat of the exhaust/engine just melts the threadlocker. And you might want to replace the exhaust gaskets.....Some people replace the gaskets every time they remove the exhaust & some people just reposition the crush gaskets.

If you do not already have one, invest in a torque wrench that measures in inch-pounds and a 6" extension. I got mine at Harbor Freight for under $20 and I use it all the time.

never actually ended up getting the headers out of the exhaust ports so the gaskets should be good but thanks for the info, definitely relieved i dont have to do that process all over again

after doing some research i found out that taking off the side shots isnt worth it cause its too much of a hassle to get them back on. (tried before i researched and couldn't even get them off cause theyre one piece) Because the crossover pipe connects them its was too hard to wrap the hole pipe from bottom to top so i was only able to wrap them starting at the cross over. If i did that without the shields the pipes looked too beat up so i put the shields back on cause they were clean and wrapped around them

I've had my exhausts off a couple of times from the wrecked rebuild to putting torque cones in. No thread locker here. And they are as snug as when I sinched em up the last time, about 7,000 miles ago.
