I bought my '02 Sportster 1200 last October. I've been using the winter months to do maintenance on the bike.
Yesterday I checked the brake fluid in each master cylinder. The bike is supposed to use Dot 5, according to the cap on the master cylinder. To my knowledge, Dot 5 is purple in color. However, the brake fluid in my bike has a light amber color like Dot 3 and 4.
The front and rear brakes work great. I simply want to top off the fluid in each master cylinder. Is it safe to assume my brake fluid is Dot 3 or 4?
Changed out my Dot 5 couple years ago to fresh fluid and it was back to amber color in a year. Go by the label or manual. Note.. my fluid was original to bike but other then amber, looked good. Dot 5 kicks butt compared to 3 or 4..especially on a bike with the hand cylinder above tank. Sad that due to the ABS Harley need to switch all back to the Dot 4 and decided it was best for all (that part was a good idea)
